LP, Vinyl record albumĪ wonderful album of Latin-tinged jazz tracks from the enigmatic Buck Clarke! Clarke was a percussionist who did an awful lot of studio work during the 60s and 70s – but he began his career with a very hip little combo that was a key part of the Washington DC underground jazz scene of the 60s. Titles include "Jeannine", "Just One Of Those Things", "All The Things You Are", "I Remember Clifford", and "Jackie My Little Cat". Also noteworthy is the rest of the group – which includes Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums. As always with his few productions from the time, Cannonball shows a great deal of sensitivity and patience with the players – probably a key factor of the success of the set.

LP, Vinyl record albumĪ gem of a session from the European expatriot scene of the postwar years – not really a tribute to Cannonball Adderley, but a rare meeting of Bud Powell and Don Byas in the studio, produced by Cannonball in Paris in 1961! The record has a tremendous amount of fire and focus – especially on the part of Powell, who could sometimes falter in a European setting – and although Byas' horn might seem a contrasting choice for Bud, he really burns with a lot of energy here – arcing, soaring, and turning with lines that show that his talents hadn't dimmed at all out of the American limelight. Bond plays Hammond and sings, and other guests include Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Dick Heckstall-Smith, and John McLaughlin – on titles that include "Can't Stand It", "Walkin In The Park", "Long Legged Baby", "Doxy", "The Grass Is Greener", "It's Not Goodbye", "Neighbor Neighbor", and "Springtime In The City".

LP, Vinyl record albumĬertainly solid work from Graham Bond – working here with an all-star lineup who really make the record cook nicely! The set features some of Bond's best contemporaries – all players who, like him, had started out in simpler mod 60s modes, but had really matured strongly by the time of this date – moving into a range of complicated jazz and rockish expressions in their own music, but uniting here with Graham for a set that's still got a nice old school groove! In a time when some of the jazz rock groups were getting a bit excessive, this album's nicely restrained – shortish tracks that focus strongly on tight hooks and soulful rhythms, but all in ways that still sound plenty adventurous. There's a warmly glowing feel to the record that's neither slick or commercial – and titles include "Children Of The World United", "Summer Days", "Rough Times", "This Time I'll Be Sweeter", and "The Only Thing I Would Wish For".

Part of the strength of the set is the jazzy backings given the music – arranged by Dave Grusin, and carried off by himself on keyboards, with other players who include Eric Gale on guitar, Dave Valentin on reeds, Steve Gadd on drums, and Ralph MacDonald on percussion. Have you got them? 200 (-) ARZACHELĬool.Angela Bofill's sublime first album – a mixture of jazzy soul and soulful jazz, all put together with a sound that's really a cut above most of her contemporaries! As with Jean Carn or Phyllis Hyman, there's a sophistication to Angela's sound here that indicates roots in much hipper territory that were still pulling strongly on her work for this mainstream set – a sound that runs deeper than you might expect for such a commercially successful record, and which has really kept it alive for years. The Beatles, the Sex Pistols, David Bowie, Queen and Led Zeppelin continue to dominate the top branches, but a massive number of new entries from the late 60s and early 70s have now muscled their way onto the hot property ladder. This list of 200 rarities is only the tip of the iceberg – the Rare Record Price Guide 2014 lists over 100,000 entries. Collectors are still prepared to go all out to attain those precious artefacts. Despite countries having to be bailed out, stock markets in chaos and even gold on the slide, the price for mega-rare vinyl remains unaffected by the recession. *PLEASE NOTE: This article is now out of date, and a new version will be found in our October 2020 version, online and in print.
